KINDRED EARTH

I sit by the ocean, with the warm sun rays striking my face

The salty smell, cool breeze off the water and the sounds of the seagull's cry

Bright blue sky, stretches and meets the sea far off into the horizon

The crashing waves set down beneath my feet, buried in the sand

Mother, we are one

Beneath the fluttering leaves of the forest green

The chirping birds and a cumulus cloud-puffed sky

A rustling brook streams on by, next to the rock on which I sit

Just you and me, pen and pad

Mother, we are one

Peace pipe burning on the front porch

Rocking gently back and forth on an old wicker chair

Overlooking the miles of grassy land

As far as the distant mountain tops

Mother, we are one

Under the star-lit, quarter-mooned sky

Circled around the crackling flame

The Indian chief speaks in his native tongue

Stories of ancestors and ancient wars forgotten

Mother, we are one

Now black smoke fills the sky

Oil-drenched duck can hardly cry

Forest trees fall to the ground

Satellites flying all around

River bottom all full of crap

E. coli water coming out of the tap

Car horns honking, emitting their fumes

Empires collapsing, cities in runes

Where is the revolution of peace and love?

As a child, I remember joy and bliss

Today, I can hardly keep up with all of this

For my children, will this be fun?

Mother, what have we done?
